Our brain has two hemispheres, the left brain and the right brain. About 95% of children use only the left brain. They fail to use the right brain which is the seat and origin of intelligence. The left brain analyzes information concerning languages and sound. The right brain integrates information concerning thinking and creativity. The abacus can help develop the right brain. This simple instrument is very effective for teaching math calculation skills to children. Learning to use an abacus and performing calculations on the abacus not only activates and stimulates both sides of the brain, but it also can enable the child to master the skill of doing math calculations mentally.
The abacus can remove the fear of mathematics. It can help memory and photographic memory as the abacus picture can be visualized mentally. The abacus will enable the child to master arithmetic functions. The benefits of abacus use can be accomplished by simple basic use. Children as young as 4 or 5 years of age are capable of learning math skills and calculating abilities that will provide lifetime benefits. As the child uses the abacus and becomes more confident in solving problems, the child's overall learning will also improve.
